Growing Cities, Growing Responsibilities – take the lead to a sustainable future!

Like every year the oikos International’s chapter Witten/Herdecke is organizing an international sustainability conference, the oikos Winter School.

Growing Cities, Growing Responsibilities – take the lead to a sustainable future!

Under this title the Witten/Herdecke University will hold the 2019 Winter School to examine sustainable urban development.

The conference takes place from March 17th to March 23rd 2019 at Witten/Herdecke University.

Cities are the living space of the future. Diverse experts predict a 75% share of population living in cities by 2050. With this shift the responsibility to care for the environment is equally growing. Today, cities already consume two thirds of all available energy and they are responsible for over 70% of all CO2 emissions. Smog and particulates have very serious consequences for the Health and the well-being of all citizens. In addition to that about 80% of the world’s population live within 60 miles of the oceans. Thus, they are inherently threatened by rising sea levels. However, cities have the chance to drive change by taking advantage of the nature of their structure.

In an intensive week, filled with lively discussions, presentations by interesting and competent speakers and exciting debates of a wide variety of topics they will concentrate on finding possible short-term solutions for our ecological challenges. The topics mobility and architecture are the two keystones that guide us through the conference. Further topics like economic and social sustainability have their place as well.

The conference’s goal is to sensitise participants to problem-solution oriented analysis of sustainable development in cities, to provide practical experience and to improve the knowledge of a sustainable all-day behaviour. It is time to not only develop solutions but to implement them in politics of the cities as well as in our daily lives.
